The Business of Language In this issue...
Following the Northern Way lead, the Regional Language Network North East (RLN-NE) is working with colleagues in the North West and Yorkshire and the Humber, to provide a much needed labour market intelligence (LMI) service focusing on foreign language capability and demand in the regions. This will support One NorthEast, NERIP and other regional bodies; positively impacting on inward investment and graduate retention. For example, data assessing the regional foreign language skills resource has recently been supplied to a large organisation considering locating its operations in the region. Further need for this information was highlighted by the Language Data Needs Analysis Survey conducted by the RLN in November 2005. Respondents indicated their uses of language skills data - inward investment promotion and responding to specific enquiries, assisting local employers, economic planning and support of EU funding bids/projects. Nationality and country of birth of the local population are of particular interest to survey respondents (60% are very likely to use this data). Over half also have a requirement for data on higher education foreign language students and graduates. Languages of most relevance to respondents at the moment are French, German, Italian and Spanish. Considering these identified needs, the RLN will shortly be publishing summaries of this data. The RLN will regularly review its LMI provision and would greatly value input to the process. To view to current data and reports visit www.rln-northeast.com/lmi, If you have any comments/suggestions regarding language data needs, would like to complete a short needs survey or have any language data enquiries, please contact Tracy Docherty lmi@rln-northernway.com or phone 07817 602720.

The European Commission has launched a Europe-wide survey of language teachers' experience of mobility in work and training. Language teachers in the UK are invited to share their experiences of teaching abroad and taking part in CPD in the country in which their languages are spoken. Teachers' opinions are being sought to identify potential obstacles to living and working in Europe. Responses will feed into a report containing recommendations for Member States, available later in 2006. To find out how to take part in this survey visit the Education providers page on our website.
Learning of Mandarin Chinese has always been a major concern for the parents of the Chinese families who are coming from Mainland China and living in Newcastle. The immediate aims of School is to provide facility and environment for the children who are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese to develop basic language skills to enable them to communicate in Mandarin orally and in written forms. The overall aim of the School is through active involvement in the learning of Mandarin Chinese to promote/develop a better understanding of Chinese culture, its people and the society. With the dramatic changes in China particularly in last 10 -15 years, the demand of learning mandarin Chinese has been, too, dramatically increased. More Cantonese speaking parents want their children to learn Mandarin; more mixed families (one of parents is non-Chinese) and more British families who adopted children from mainland China are determined to bring up their children with both Chinese and British culture and language; more young students have a strong desire to take GCSE and A-level exams of mandarin Chinese; and of course, more tourists and businessmen are keen to learn mandarin Chinese before they are off for China. The role of the mandarin Chinese school does, however, not end there. Especially with the recent regional policy of attracting more investments from China, this only mandarin Chinese school in Newcastle could make a surprising difference on the result of that policy.
