Celebrated in 45 countries across Europe, the European Day of Languages will take place on 26 September. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of language learning; increase appreciation of all languages; and encourage lifelong language learning. If you are planning any kind of language or culture-related event, why not do it on the European Day of Languages?

The European Commission has announced that 2008 will be the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. It is to increase understanding and appreciation of the different cultures in Europe and help develop a sense of shared values and traditions. The year also aims to highlight the contribution of different cultures to EU member states’ heritage and way of life, and recognise intercultural dialogue is essential for learning to live together in harmony.

Hartlepool secondary school pupils rose to a language challenge recently and supported primary pupils at the same time. The aim of the project was to enhance children’s ability in modern languages by using enterprise skills like teamwork and problem solving and to show the children that languages are useful – not just in school, but also in real life.

The study has shown that language skills can significantly improve export success for European companies. Analysis of the survey responses also identified key elements of language management associated with strong export performance, and there could be significant gains to the EU economy if all exporting SMEs employ these techniques.
