The Regional Language Network team met with students at the Work Experience Fair, organised by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne's Careers Advisory Service on 13 November 2003, where 36 candidates pre-registered onto the BLIS jobs database. 60% of British trade is with non-English speaking countries, according to UK Trade & Investment. Following audits carried out by the National Centre for Languages, is yours one of the 20 per cent of North East companies that has lost business abroad because of difficulties with language or communicating with other cultures? Is yours one of the 40 per cent of companies that has encountered communications problems while trying to do business abroad? The Big Word Survey - March 2002 set out to ascertain the Euro-language 'friendly' FTSE companies, by asking 100 receptionists in French and Spanish to be put through to a foreign speaker. Out of the 100 FTSE companies surveyed, 54 receptionists failed to put the caller through and 72% failed to understand a simple question in either French or Spanish. Businesses who employ staff with languages can give their company the edge over competitors and can also gain respect from their foreign customers by being more culturally aware. The National Languages for Export campaign celebrates the rich diversity of culture and communication around the world. Nine awards will be won by those organisations who have recognised that building relationships with customers abroad is about showing an understanding of traditions, customs and language. Regional Award Winners demonstrated how they achieved success in overseas non-English speaking markets, or through learning languages in order to prepare students for working in overseas non-English speaking countries, at an Awards Ceremony held at Lumley Castle on 7 November 2003. The Division of Modern Foreign Languages at the University of Northumbria is holding a short course entitled 'A Taste of Burgundy' on Saturday 13 December 2003 from 10.00 am - 1.00 pm in Ellison Boardroom1 at the University of Northumbria. Participants will hear Antoine Olivier of Olivier Père et fils; a long-established winegrowing producer in the heart of Burgundy, give a presentation on the wines of Burgundy, with the opportunity of sampling some fine wines.
