The Business of Language is a monthly guide on language and cultural issues affecting businesses.

Win a mini cruise for two to Amsterdam, courtesy of DFDS Seaways!

To enter, simply recommend a friend and answer the following questions:

1. How many North East businesses are aware of language barriers?

See www.rln-northeast.com/about/index.htm for help!

2. List the DFDS Seaways routes from the UK.

See www.dfdsseaways.co.uk.

Email your answers to rln-northeast@onenortheast.co.uk by 5pm on Friday 13th June, enclosing the name and email address of a colleague who will receive future editions of The Business of Language.

The first correct answer pulled out of the hat will be on their way to Amsterdam!!!

Cultural Etiquette

Each month we will give you one important tip to help you avoid embarrassing gaffes!

Chinese business

Examine any business cards you receive for a few moments. Introduce your colleagues and allow guests to introduce themselves. Use both hands when presenting business cards and ensure that the writing on the card is facing the recipient. Cards should be received with both hands and placed on the table in front of you - to immediately put the card in your pocket or bag is considered offensive · and you should look at the cards occasionally throughout the meeting.

Further tips are available at www.rln-northeast.com

Have you considered a cultural briefing session to improve communication with your target market?

See www.rln-northeast.com/blis/index.htm for details of providers.

European Language Portfolio

This is a portable document that enables the adult language learner to record their past achievements and track their current progress against UK and European language levels.

The portfolio consists of three sections. The Passport provides a compact and readily usable "language CV". The Language Biography enables you to record in more detail experience of languages and intercultural insights you may have acquired. The Dossier contains tangible proof of your competence including formal qualifications.

Further details available at www.rln-northeast.com/info/index.htm.

Diary date - BLIS Jobs

RLN NE will be exhibiting at both the Newcastle and Durham Graduate Recruitment Fairs to be held on 16th and 17th June respectively. We will be promoting a new service called BLIS Jobs among this year's languages graduates. Have you thought about how your company could benefit from employees with language skills? Why not tap into the database for instant access to quality candidates and save www.blis.org.uk/ne on your list of favourites!
